Connect phones by QR code
Updated October 27, 2026
Listeners in Berth have no passwords. The admin creates a listener, shows a QR code, and the phone scans it — the library appears and the app remembers the server.
Pair a phone
- In the web admin create a listener (or pick an existing one) and press the button to connect a device.
- In the Berth app tap “Scan QR code” and point the camera at the screen — or tap “Enter code” and type the server address and the code.
- The admin page shows when the phone is connected.
The code is 8 characters without look-alike letters (no 0, O, 1, I or L), works once and expires after two minutes. If it expires, show a new one.
Home and internet addresses
In Settings the admin can enter a home network address (e.g. http://192.168.0.4:8080) and an internet address (e.g. https://books.example.com). The QR code carries both, and the app switches between them by itself. For the internet address you need HTTPS — see installation.
What each listener sees
- The whole library or only picked books, sections, groups or languages.
- Age ratings 0+, 6+, 12+, 16+ and 18+: enter a child's date of birth and they see only books for their age. The limit grows with the child.
- Books without a rating can be shown or hidden.
Revoking a device
On the Devices page the admin can revoke any phone. The app on it signs out and deletes its downloads and library; links it got through the server stop working at once.
Login and password, if needed
For a phone that cannot scan a QR code, the admin can give a listener an optional login and password.
Questions
Does each family member need an e-mail address?
No. Listeners exist only on your server; nobody signs up anywhere.
Does progress follow the listener to another phone?
Yes. The position is saved on the phone every few seconds and synced through the server; a server position replaces the local one only if it is newer.
